Oral Hygiene Care & Patient Education

Empowering Roswell and Marietta patients with reliable oral health information. Professional cleanings at our office work best when paired with strong home care — the guidance below comes from our clinical team.

Electric brush versus manual brushes

Multiple studies compare manual and electric toothbrushes. Although not all electric brushes are the same, research generally finds that electric brushes remove plaque more efficiently than manual brushes with less damage to teeth and gums.

You can achieve excellent results with a manual brush, but electric brush movements make thorough cleaning easier — especially for patients with arthritis, limited dexterity, or orthodontic appliances. Electric brushes can also help children maintain better hygiene in less time.

Some electric brushes (such as Sonicare) produce sonic vibrations that are difficult to replicate manually. Others (Oral-B, Rotadent) use smaller heads to reach tight areas — important for braces or a history of gum disease.

How to floss your teeth

Teeth are round, so the surfaces between them are hard to reach with a toothbrush alone. Flossing is the best way to clean those areas. Ideally floss after meals; at minimum, floss once daily before bed.

When flossing, avoid cutting into the gums. The goal is to clean tooth surfaces, not the gum tissue. In each space, press the floss against each tooth (hug the tooth in a C-shape) and gently move it back and forth and up and down, then repeat on the adjacent tooth.

Is mouthwash important?

When brushing and flossing are done well, a non-alcoholic mouthwash once in the morning can help maintain fresh breath. Chlorhexidine rinses may be recommended after periodontal treatment such as deep cleanings because they reduce bacteria associated with gum disease — but long-term use can stain teeth, so follow your dentist's instructions.

Avoid mouthwashes with alcohol, which can contribute to dry mouth.
