Post-Operative Instructions

Follow these general guidelines after dental surgery. Your clinician may provide additional instructions specific to your procedure.

After tooth extractions

• Bite on gauze as directed to control bleeding
• Do not rinse vigorously for 24 hours
• Apply ice packs externally to reduce swelling
• Eat soft foods and avoid straws

After dental implants

Keep the surgical site clean as directed. Avoid chewing on the implant area until your dentist confirms it has healed. Report any unusual pain, loosening, or swelling promptly.

After root canal or crown placement

Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your final restoration is placed. Report persistent pain or swelling promptly. See our root canal and crowns pages for more information.

When to call our office
